The book is based upon the methodology used by Forster to classify new species whilst on Cook’s Second Voyage. The work also includes information on the voyage itself, and the problems encountered. There is an extensive discussion of the Enchiridion in Michael Hoare’s The ‘Resolution’ Journal of Johann Reinhold Forster, published by the Hakluyt Society in 1982.
