Woodcroft (1803-79) was passionate about steam engines and was responsible for saving Stevenson’s Rocket for the nation and also for the founding of the Science Museum in South Kensington, London.

Small 4to., [viii], iv, 140pp., additional pictorial lithographed title, 16 full-page lithograph plates, illustrations in text; tiny waterstain to lower margin of last few plates, occasional light spotting. Contemporary brown morocco gilt by Remnant, Edmonds & Remnants, covers with gilt borders, spine in six compartments, gilt lettered direct in second and fourth, others richly gilt, large pictorial gilt device to upper cover, raised bands, all edges gilt; hinges a bit rubbed.
